-The Chinese flag is red which represents the blood spilled during the communist revolution. On the flag there is one large star, representing leadership, and four small stars which represent four social classes: capitalists, bourgeoisie, workers, and peasants all united under one Communist Party.
-China has 1.3 billion people, a little over 20 percent of the world’s population.(You think it sounds like a lot, come see it)
- The Chinese New Year is the first day of the lunar calendar based on the cycles of the moon. The date varies from year to year but typically falls in January or February. (Jan 26th this yr)
- The twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig, with each year represented by one of the animals. A full Chinese zodiac is twelve years. A complete calendar cycle is sixty years. (Im a pig)
- The money used in China is called renminbi, meaning the people’s currency. The basic unit is the yuan. (Also called UN)
- The Great Wall can be seen by the human eye from outer space.
- Giant pandas are a national treasure in China. There are about 1,600 pandas living in the wild today.(Thanks to pressure from the US, but dont tell a Chinese person that)
-The compass, paper, gunpowder, and printing are called the Four Greatest Ancient Chinese Inventions. Other Chinese inventions include fireworks and ice cream.
- China is the homeland of tea, and its cultivation dates back two thousand years.(Damn good tea I might add)
- Mount Qomolangma (also known as Mount Everest), the highest point in the world, is located between China and Nepal.
- In China, a person’s family name comes first, followed by the first name. There is no middle name.
- The three most popular Chinese family names are Li, Zhang, and Wang.(They make up about 75% of the phone book..jk)
-China has an obligatory Military service of 2 years for all men between 18 and 22. Women of the same age group are also recruited for specific military jobs.(Damn commi's)
-The Han Chinese is the largest majority group in China. Mandarin Chinese is the official language . However in total, 55 official minorities and 206 listed languages are spoken in China.(Each region has its own dialect)
-The Tienanmen Square in Beijing is the world's largest public gathering place and the Three Gorges Dam is the biggest dam.(Not in Beijing)
-Chinese Civilization is one of the few ancient civilizations to have its individual writing script. The Chinese language has over 20,000 characters. The average Chinese only learns about 5,000 of these in his lifetime.(I know about 10)
-24% of the world speaks Chinese. The official state language is Pu-tong-hwa or Mandarin.(This is why I want to study it)
-According to economists, China will become the world's wealthiest nation by the year 2012.(Just icing on the cake)
